One of the key issue for the nascent nation of the U.S.A. was the institutionalized separation of 'Church' and 'State'. It seems to me that this was an important issue because the founders had seen first-hand the tyranny born of governments based on the authority given to them by the church. Hopefully after the coming 2nd revolution, a key issue will be the separation of 'Corporation' and 'State', now that we have seen the tyranny born of a government whose power comes from corporations instead of people. (Did you know that business entities now have, in many cases, the same legal status as people?)

A company called iD2 Technology has developed a "touchscreen" computer-display that floats in the air like a hologram. The device, called the M2i, projects a 30" diagonal display similar to those seen in the Stephen Speilberg film "Minority Report".

To truly understand just how revolutionary & "cutting edge" the technology of the new PlayStation 3 controller (previewed at E3 2006) is, you should watch this controller review from Gamespot TV, circa 1999 (and yes, that is Adam Sessler).

May 1, 2006 - V is for Vendetta, A is for Anarchy

For anyone who doesn't know, the movie "V for Vendetta" is reportedly very different from the book, watered down so much that Alan Moore has asked for his name to be removed from it. You can read his opinions on the script (and DC comics) in various interviews like this one. The most notable change is political -- the plot has been changed from a self-proclaimed anarchist fighting against a fascist empire to a liberal fighting a neo-conservative state.

There's some interesting reading at A for Anarchy.org ... (http://www.aforanarchy.org )

vendetta - "The vendetta [feud] may prevail ... where the government is feared or distrusted to such an extent that private justice is considered more equitable. The obligation to carry on the vendetta usually rests primarily on the male who is next of kin to the wronged person. Among some peoples, vengeance may be taken on any member of the group of the person who has done the wrong. "

May 1st marks, perhaps, the anniversary of the first Unsolicited Mass Commercial Email (May 1 1978)...

According to Wikipedia (which can not, as we know, be considered reliable):

May 1 1978 - The first e-mail spam of history was sent by a DEC marketing
representative to every ARPANET address on the west coast of the United States.

Elsewhere online, I found what could be considered the closest thing to a first hand account (and the blog upon which the "first spam" claim is based):

"" In those days, there was a printed directory of all people on the ARPAnet. Gary spoke to his technical associate, and arranged to have all the addresses in the directory on the west coast typed in, and then added some customer contacts in other locations...

[However] the mail program would only accept 320 addresses. The rest overflowed into the body of the message. When they found some recipients had not gotten it, they re-sent the message to the rest of the recipients. ...

Thuerk thought, and maintains to this day that he didn't think he was doing anything wrong -- even though he gets a moderate amount of spam on his current E-mail account. He felt the [new computer] was really relevant news to the Arpanet community, [as it was] the first major system with ARPAnet software built into it. Indeed, some of those who commented on the message felt it was definitely more of interest than other small mass mailings they had seen, with baby announcements and personal trivia.

Nonetheless, he knew there would be some negative reaction. He primed his boss to be ready for complaint, though he didn't anticipate how strong it would be. The Defense Communications Agency (DCA), which ran the Arpanet, called Thuerk's boss, a former Air Force officer, to register a strong complaint... ""

> Read more at Brad Templeton's Blog (http://www.templetons.com/brad/spamreact.html )

But "the first spam" is a somewhat dubious claim; many people consider the first spam, as we think of it today, as being a message posted to a bunch of Usenet newsgroups by a law firm called Canter and Siegel on 5 March 1994.

According to an article on CNET * a better date to observe a "happy spamaversity" would be April 12, because "On April 12, 1994, a pair of attorneys in Arizona launched a homemade marketing software program that forever changed the Internet. "

ARPRANET timeline:

1972 - Ray Tomlinson (BBN) modifies an e-mail program for ARPANET, where it
becomes a quick hit. The @ sign was chosen from the punctuation keys on
Tomlinson's Model 33 Teletype for its "at" meaning (March)

1978 - According to http://www.zakon.org/robert/internet/timeline/#Growth ,
in 1978 there were less than 188 hosts connected to the ARPAnet (including some
overseas colleges).

1983 - With more than 300 computers connected, its protocols were changed
to TCP/IP. In that same year, the unclassified military Milnet network was
split off from ARPAnet.

electrosmog - keep in mind that the radiation is not just coming from the cell phones themselves. There is no evidence
that non-ionizing raditation does not cause health effects in humans. Radiation, in the form of extreme low frequency (ELF) and radio frequency microwaves (RF/MW) is bombarding us constantly from electrical wiring, radio and television transmission (soon to be increased
by high-definition television signals), cell phone and other microwave broadcasting stations, and from wireless internet routers and
related antennas (giga-hertz band "hot spots" - no pun intended-, and wireless phones).

Industry backed scientistific studies claim "there is no proof that there are risks" from cell phone use or broadcasting towers,
but keep in mind that this was also the manta of the cigarette industry for decades.

"Is it really good, then, to whole-body irradiate 24 hours a day?"

Yepes teaches Robert Rodriguez to paint Salma Hayek.

The Yepes' fashionable art "fad" reminds me very much of the fad popularity of Nagel in the 80's (remember Patrick Nagel?). This is so Pop Culture: cheesy director painting a movie star and calling it an art show... draws: Movie Star. Director. Cool "hispanic" angle. Tie in with Frida.

P2P Indexing/Search engine sites to form coalition to fight MPAA

"A point to consider is TorrentSpy and ISOHunt are search engines - not trackers. Their role in the BitTorrent community is considerably different from previous lawsuit recipients such as the trackers EliteTorrents and LokiTorrent.

Trackers are responsible for directing BitTorrent community traffic by hosting the actual torrent file. Conversely, indexing sites operate in a fashion similar to Google or Yahoo! and only search a tracker's database. They host no actual torrent files."

Since the "Gospel of St. Thomas" teaches doctrines not in harmony with the rest of the Bible, for example, that there were two separate creations of mankind "one perfect, the second flawed", and that men living today can acquire the "image of God", it is viewed with great skepticism - except for a certain cult-like following of people who believe that it more accurately reflects the "real" Jesus than Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

Speaking of SuperBowl ads --

My award for "Funny, but not in the way they intended" goes to the Coca Cola company for their "Kick-Ass Scarecrow" ad. This ad for an energy drink is the story of a farmer who gets SO amped up that he builds a robot scarecrow... It's funny because it's essentially the tale of someone on a multi-day 'speed' binge.

In this tale, after many days strung out on amphetamines and "Vault energy drink", the farmer starts hearing a voice in his head.

The voice goads him into building a scarecrow that has a flame thrower. But like all speeders, it's not good enough. He eventually designs a mobile remote-controlled scarecrow, and uses is to kill not only Crows and Foxes, but "Hippies". The commercial fades to black before showing the bloody corpses of the long-haired youths who made the mistake of camping on a speed-addicted farmers land... One can only imagine the farmer's horror when the cops show up to arrest him for murder and possession of amphetimines; "But the voice said that my scarecrow was pathetic!"

Mylo - Destroy Rock & Roll

When listening to a new CD, you're always ready with your finger right on the skip button, no matter how mind-bogglingly amazing everyone's telling you it is. Then, every so often an album comes out that totally sucks your ears in and freezes your finger on the spot. You'll be listening to Mylo for four tracks before you realise you haven't skipped a track, in fact you'll probably want to go back one, to listen to " Drop The Pressure" again. (Like you haven't heard it enough in clubs already).

Instead, you keep listening and then in "In My Arms" there's a "Betty Davis Eyes" sample (by Kim Carnes, if you're old enough to remember). "Guilty Of Love" comes over all melodic and pretty then "Paris Four Hundred" gets you moving around in your chair again like you've got ants in your pants.

"Musclecars" is the next track to come off the album, both with and without vocals - a sneaky little electro tune with woo-hoo-hoo-hoos and bleeps that sounds a bit like Royksopp . With 14 tracks all hovering around the house/electro area and all mostly winners, it probably won't be long before you start hearing more about Mylo. Not just for the faggy fashion losers, either, even if they do play this stuff quite a lot.

The song is the title track from Mylo's debut album that will finally hit stores stateside on February 7. Neville has included some extra beats and a high-pitched string section to add some dancefloor drama.

The albulm track samples a preacher's moral rant against a list of '80s pop stars. In an interview, Mylo stated that he was not sure if Americans would get the humor of this. He added that many of the artists that the evangelists mentions have been an inspiration to him. "When I did my PhD [in Philosophy] at UCLA I really got into the classic rock stuff from the '80s. Some of those tracks I sampled for the album," Milo said. "I didn't have much work to do at UCLA, but there was a great radio station in LA County. I used to drive around just listening to the radio."

Exxon Mobil Posts Record Profit of 3.7 Billion Dollars per Month

The oil company Exxon today posted the Highest Quarterly and Annual Profit ever for a U.S. company (corporation) -- $10.71 billion [USD] in profit for the fourth quarter, and $36.13 billion profit for the year. 4th quarter earnings jumped 27% , revenues grew almost 20%.

The company's earnings amounted to $1.71 per share for the October-December quarter, up 27 percent from $8.42 billion, or $1.30 per share, in the year ago quarter. The result topped the then-record quarterly profit of $9.92 billion Exxon posted in the third quarter of 2005.

Exxon's profit for the year was also the largest annual reported net income in U.S. history, according to Howard Silverblatt, a senior index analyst for Standard & Poor's. He said the previous high was Exxon's $25.3 billion profit in 2004.

Quarterly revenue was $99.66 billion ($99,660,000,000), very close to the $100.72 billion Exxon posted in the third quarter, which was the first time a U.S. public company generated more than $100 billion in sales in a single quarter.

For the full year, revenue grew to $371 billion (from $298.04 billion the previous year). To put that into perspective, Exxon's revenue for the year exceeded Saudi Arabia's estimated 2005 gross domestic product of $340.5 billion (GDP according to statistics maintained by the Central Intelligence Agency).
