Well rejoice friends, because the day of reckoning is upon us. Those with heart conditions might want to sit this one out; the rest of you can find out if the iPhone blends at the following page: http://www.willitblend.com/

Pfizer Falls Victim to P2P Hack

JUNE 12, 2007 | A telecommuter's casual link to a file-sharing network leaked personal information on more than 17,000 current and former employees at pharmaceutical giant Pfizer.

In a letter to employees dated June 1, Pfizer privacy officer Lisa Goldman states that the data was stored on a Pfizer laptop used in an employee's home.

"Due to the unauthorized installation of certain file sharing software on the laptop, files stored in the laptop containing the names, Social Security numbers, and in some instances, addresses of approximately 17,000 present and former Pfizer colleagues were exposed to one or more third parties," the letter says.

In a subsequent letter to the Attorney General of New Hampshire, Pfizer attorney Bernard Nash states that 15,700 of the employees definitely had their data accessed and copied, and another 1,250 might have lost data as well.

Pfizer did not say how it discovered the hack, nor which file sharing networks or software were involved. "Our investigation revealed that files containing names and SSN data were exposed to and, in some instances, accessed by one or more unauthorized persons over a 'peer-to-peer' network," the letter says. "[But] we were unable to determine the identity or location of those persons, or whether any particular file was opened or examined.    [?  How does that relate to 'definitely had their data accessed and copied' quote above?- Editor] " ...

The issue is not P2P software; the issue is that 'customer' data should not be leaving the physical business ("corporate") campus/servers.

How about this: "Due to our allowing employees to bring personal information files home with them on laptops ... this information was exposed..."

According to a paper referenced in the article (see below for Reader), the "inadvertent" sharing really just boils down to one thing:
users who share entire folders instead of sharing just a particular file (or set of files). >

"... many users will unknowingly expose these documents for many
reasons ....[including] ...
 •  General laziness on the part of the user If a user has a folder such as My
Documents with many media folders inside, they may share My
Documents rather than selecting each media folder individually to share,
thus exposing all the other types of documents and folders contained within.
 •  Wizards designed to determine media folders Some sharing clients come
with wizards that scan an individuals computer and recommend folders
containing media to share. If there is an MP3 or image file in a folder with
important documents, that entire folder could be exposed by such a wizard."

Look at the supporting article they point to:
"Findings of the Promisec summary audit conducted over the last twelve months revealed that 25,090 (13%) of the corporate PCs surveyed had unauthorized USB devices attached to them, opening the door to data loss and the opportunity for USB-borne viruses and malware to enter the corporate network. 7720 (4%) of corporate PCs had peer-to-peer (P2P) applications installed. 2895 (1.5%) of the corporate PCs did not have the latest Microsoft service packs and 3281 (1.7%) had anti-virus monitoring and remediation issues. 2316 (1.2%) of the 193,000 audited endpoints were without required 3rd party desktop security agents. Finally, 1582 (0.8%) of endpoints had unauthorized remote control software, and a lesser percentage had unauthorized and unprotected shareware. "

Oh my god! Not an unauthorized USB device!

This seems like some kind of 'control every aspect of your corporate-drone's computers or face dire consequences!' propaganda. (sells big brother software and consulting services)

"An important note to keep in mind: FLV Player uses the Macromedia Flash 8 FLV Playback component (plugin) to play .flv files. This component functions best when your .flv contains valid metadata. All .flv files created with recent encoders such as Macromedia Flash 8 Video Encoder (macromedia Flash Pro 8) have their metadata injected automatically. However, if you wish to view older .flv files they may not contain up-to-date metadata. I highly recommend you use Buraks FLV Metadata Injector to automatically inject correct metadata into those files."

5 days till internet radio d-day

For Immediate Release - May 30, 2007
Internet Radio Files for Emergency Stay

Large and Small Webcasters + National Public Radio
File Joint Petition in U.S. Court of Appeals

WASHINGTON D.C. – An emergency stay filed today in the U.S. Court of
Appeals for the D.C. Circuit could delay the looming D-Day for Internet radio. The
motion, filed by the Digital Media Association in conjunction with National Public
Radio, and the Small Commercial Webcasters, formally requests the court delay the
implementation of a “radical and arbitrary” recording royalty rate increase imposed by
the Copyright Royalty Board May 1. Legislation that would repeal the rate increase is
pending in the Senate and the House, but may not be brought to a vote in either chamber
before July 15th, the day the first payments under the newly increased rates for webcasters
are due.
July 15th, D-day for Internet radio, is fast approaching, SaveNetRadio
spokesperson, Jake Ward said, “and we are hopeful that today s motion for an emergency
stay will afford the Internet radio industry crucial time to rehear this case. We have every
confidence that Congress will continue to give the Internet Radio Equality Act the
attention it deserves with the urgency it requires, as evidenced by the over 100
cosponsors who have signed on H.R. 2060 since its April 26th introduction.
SaveNetRadio and the millions of webcasters, artists, and listeners we represent urge the
Court to give this motion full consideration.

A successful lift-off of the space shuttle Atlantis took place on 23:38:04 UTC on June 8th, 2007 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Atlantis took off after a long delay due to damage from a hail storm earlier this year. During their 11-day space mission the seven Atlantis astronauts will install a new, 16-ton truss segment on the International Space Station (ISS) and will deliver another set of solar panels and batteries to the station. Atlantis is the fifth space shuttle launched since the 2003 Columbia disaster... [read more >]

From the "Huh?" department (see also "Uh... what?")

eBay to announce StumbleUpon buy today

Update: So, it’s official, eBay has bought StumbleUpon for $75 million. Here’s the release.

eBay, the San Jose, Calif.-based auction giant is likely to announce its acquisition of Stumble Upon after the close to markets today, according to informed sources. The news of a pending deal was first reported back in April 2007. The acquisition price is said to be $75 million. StumbleUpon has raised close to $1.5 million in seed financing

The rationale behind the deal will emerge in time. There have been some who have disagreed with my hypothesis on why eBay wanted to buy StumbleUpon, a social book marking discovery service.

By marrying the toolbar to Skype client, eBay can do an end run around Google’s dominance of the search business. A simple search box inside Skype client is all it would take. It is not that far fetched: Skype has been slowly integrating various different services (including PayPal) into its client, and slowly becoming eBay’s desktop backdoor.

Our readers and others around the web furiously debated this theory, and offered alternative views.

TechCrunch is reporting on the pending announcement as well.

.pls files and streaming audio from your web server...

... so if I can use the PLS file, why can't I use the standard Playlist file M3U?
You can, in fact it is perfectly fine to use either file, it's just that the shoutcast website has made extensive use of this file format, but as Icecast users know, it is not the standard, M3U's come in real handy when you have large playlist, PLS seem to lack any real ability beyond this simple task. M3U files also support title tags in the Winamp Player, so in essence you will get more bang out of using M3U files . But PLS files have been used extensively, and I promote their use for the simplicity and the fact that you have probably seen them more often in this streaming medium.

I tried hosting PLS files with my web host and it didn't work, the files just got displayed as text files, why did this happen?

Simply because your web servers MIME types were not setup properly to handle PLS files, in this case you must add them to your MIME types file. The proper entry is:

audio/x-scpls pls

or if
you are using M3U files

audio/x-mpegurl m3u

If your web host does not allow you to access your mime types, you can request that it be added or, if your web host supports it, you can use the .htaccess file to add the mime type to the server. If you see an .htaccess file already in your base www directory, add this line to the bottom of the file: (WARNING: If you are uncomfortable with configuring a server or do not fully understand what you are doing, you can cause your website to cease functioning by deleting parts of the .htaccess file unknowingly)

 AddType audio/x-scpls pls

This method will effectively tell the server how to handle the file correctly from the directory of the .htaccess file and all subdirectories of it.
