The world of Elder Scrolls Oblivion ("Tamriel") suffers from a magical curse*: most containers will have their contents replaced after three days [in the game**] have gone by. [And the programmers have never played World of Warcraft, apparently, so they have no idea how useful an item storage "bank" is to players.] Characters are limited in how much they can carry (by weight), so it leads to the natural question for new players of "Where can I store my stuff?"
After exhausting the logical choices (trying the warehouse, for example) they try to put things in containers like chests, only to eventually come back one day to find their things are gone...
* polite euphamism for 'not well-concieved game design'
** 72 hours game time; this 'respawn' clock is RESET whenever you visit an area/open the container, so it may seem like your stuff "stays" longer than that.
The game designers apparently felt that giving players the option to buy a house was enough. But this is of no help at all to players with less than 1,000 gold (i.e. all new players)... It turns out the solution is this: find an area without a lot of traffic by other characters, and just dump all your stuff on the ground. It will never get taken, and it will be there when you come back, no longer how long you are gone!
A stupid annoying solution? Yes. But a solution none the less. (Just what I need; a messy room in my game world that's even worse than the messy room I have in real life...)
Here's what I used:
(1) The Pirate Ship at the dock of the Imperial City
Got into a fight with the pirates my first day playing; the guards killed 'em... so I took over the Pirate's Cabin (on the ship "The Marie Elena"). I put my stuff all over the floor. I tested it by leaving the area entirely for more than three game days (72 game hours)... came back, and... yep, items in containers (cabinets, shelves, the desk) were gone (replaced by junk), but the stuff I left on the floor was fine. If you're wondering, like I was, if the Captain ever comes back:
it turns out he's MIA until you start the assassin's guild quest involving the Maria Elena pirates; as this is an optional story-line path, you can either never start that quest, or just clear your stuff out of the ship before you start that quest.
(2) The top level of the Lighthouse at the Docks of the Imperial City
Tested in the same way as above: just dump your stuff on the floor, and ignore the crates. It seems that the poor lighthouse keeper just stays in the basement most of the time, as the lighthouse doesn't actually have a light... and the guards in the lower level hardly ever find their way out; when they do, they'll just head straight for the door (they'll ignore you and your stuff forever).
Note that if you join a guild, the same trick works for Guild Houses: ignore the Chests and other containers, just pick a bedroom and dump your stuff on the floor in there.
I haven't tested this in outdoor areas (like city streets), so I can only recommend you use rooms.
I did dump some stuff in that area in the Market District with all the outdoor crates (the ones you can, for some reason, take stuff from, and it's not considered stealing...). The stuff has always been there, but it might be because I revisit the city before 72 game hours pass (I haven't bothered to make sure/test, as I did with the containers).
p.s. I read rumors online that another problem with containers (and houses you buy?) is that non-player characters will sometimes take your stuff out of containers (locked or not). But I have to say that in over 200 hours of gameplay, I've never seen this happen myself; maybe I've never encountered it because I don't generally keep my stuff in containers (or houses). Another reason to dump stuff on the floor, I guess...
Yes, you can join as many guilds as you want, with no negative repercussions. (Though you still have to be aware of your actions; e.g. killing someone on a Thieves' Guild quest might be okay for the Assassin's Guild, but won't fly with the Thieves' Guild...)

played plain vanilla the first time through, then I started buying DLCs one at a time, then I bought Shivering Isles. I decided to take it easy on Mods, as some of them can cause problems, and the big fix for the Mods has had to go through 11 releases just to keep up. So I've got only one Mod now, the Bank of Cyrodiil. -link
